Four Appropriate Learning Activities For Homeschooling A Preschooler

Posted on: 11 October 2017

If you are homeschooling your preschooler, it's important that you are incorporating appropriate activities that most children learn during this stage in their lives. Here are four appropriate learning activities to include:

ABC Activities: Children in preschool should be able to say their ABCs and identify the sounds that each letter makes. This also includes being able to decipher the difference between a capital and lowercase letter. One appropriate activity to help with letter learning is using an "alphabet museum." Each day, you pick a letter you will work on and throw some items you find in the house that begin with that letter in a box. You can also do matching games that use both capital and lowercase letters to match together, as well as picking up a few alphabet workbooks that can help work through each letter.

Fine Motor Skill Activities: Next, you will want to include a fine motor skill activity. This is going to help your child develop healthy hand-eye coordination, which is important as they grow older. This will help them hold a pencil correctly, which is important when learning to write. You also want to incorporate scissor activities with safety scissors, of course. Cutting shapes is a great activity, as well as coloring and gluing.

Math: Kids at this age should also be learning math skills. Being able to count to twenty is important. Your child should also be able to tell time, so include activities that help your child learn to read a clock. You can even make and color a clock together and practice reading the time by moving the hands. You can also demonstrate counting skills by writing out numbers and putting the correct number of objects inside of each square with that number written in it.

Reading: Your child should also be learning to read at this time. Point to words and have them sound it out  by using letters that you have already established in your ABC lessons. You should be reading every day, and your child should also be able to re-tell stories that you are reading to them. Be sure to ask questions about the book as well to help them understanding how to decipher concepts in the book.

Teaching these four appropriate lessons in homeschool learning is a great way to help your child develop their skills that they are able to during this stage in their life.
