Emphasize These Benefits When You Teach Reverse Parking To Your Students

When you're a driving instructor, one of the skills that you'll need to teach your students is reverse parking. Many novice drivers only drive forward into parking spaces, but there's a lot of value in being able to back up into a chosen spot. Even though your students might partly know that this skill is important, they may seem a bit resistant to learning because of the challenges, and will perhaps tell you that they'll always find a parking spot that they can drive straight into. To help your students understand the importance of being able to reverse park, emphasize these benefits.
The Safety Of Driving Out Forward
One of the big benefits of reverse parking is that it enables you to leave the parking space, driveway, or other area while moving forward. Whenever your car is in reverse, there's a heightened chance of you making contact with something. It can be dangerous to have to back out of a parking space in certain areas. For example, if you have to back out onto a busy road, visibility may be an issue and there's a chance that you could back into the path of a motorist. When you reverse park, you can drive straight into the roadway when the coast is clear.
The Ability To Secure Cargo
Sometimes, drivers are carrying things of value that thieves may attempt to access through the rear of the vehicle. This may especially be true with a hatchback, as people can see inside the vehicle. When you park nose first, you leave the rear of the vehicle susceptible to theft. Someone could break the window, access the latch to open the hatch, and then remove your item. If you can reverse park against a solid object, such as the wall of a building, opening the hatch to remove the object would be difficult or impossible.
The Convenience Of Exiting
In many cases, backing out of a parking spot takes longer than driving out forward. Even in a crowded shopping center parking lot, other motorists may not give you enough space to back out and then move forward, which can leave you sitting in your spot and looking for an opening for longer than you'd like. If you took the opportunity to reverse park earlier on, you'll have more convenience with exiting. Because you can quickly drive out of the spot, you'll be able to leave the lot faster than if you hadn't backed into the spot.
